Born and raised in Potomac, MD, Daphne Boogaard has always participated in the operations of horse farms. Her mother and father were both active members of the Potomac hunt and very supportive of her "equine habit" while she was growing up. Daphne was an active member of Pony Club beginning at age 7 by participating in Dressage, Eventing, and being first in the Region as she captained the winning "Know-down" team in 1984. She decided her love was in Hunter/ Jumper/Equitation and decided to pursue the Hunter world.

Daphne first attended Southern Seminary College in Buena Vista, VA with the intention of majoring in Equine Business. She later decided that the horse business was not learned through a "text book," but from hands on opportunities working with the best in the business. While attending UMD, and being the main caretaker to her father, (who was a stroke patient), she pursued hands on experience from many local trainers. She graduated UMD in 1996 with a degree in Sociology with emphasis on childhood Psychology. During her studies, she rode on the University of Maryland Intercollegiate Equestrian Team with Emmie Prettyman and Clay Hill Stables. She showed regularly as an amateur on Court Jester (hunters and eq) , and Oh al (jumpers), sweeping many championships locally and at the "A" shows. She competed in IHSA Regionals in 1996, pointing out and successfully moved on to the Open division. She had continued to actively participate in IHSA as an alumni and was 5th over fences at Nationals in 2004. She now coaches her own team of 18 riders for George Washington University. The riders vary in levels from walk/ trot to Open. The team results can also be found on the webpage.

After graduating college from UMD, Daphne Boogaard became a professional hunter rider and trainer. Her passion continues to be teaching students that are interested in participating in horse shows. Daphne takes a serious approach to putting out the best riders she can. She works with her students physically and mentally. She expects her riders to have goals for themselves. As she teaches, she helps ease students to achieve the goals that have been planned. Students at Tulip Pond are never faced with an unsuitable mount, or put in high pressure situations that they may not be ready for. Students at Tulip Pond are expected to learn solid proper equitation skills, sportsmanship, and horsemanship. Although we offer many services, Tulip Pond is not a full service facility! We expect that our riders learn as much about their horse as they can. Daphne teaches outstanding sportsmanship, and horsemanship skills. She believes that "knowing" about horses, is also knowing how to take care of them in a manner that is putting the horses well- being first. Daphne also intends to keep the lesson program at Tulip Pond small, and personal.

Daphne works hard continuing to educate herself, as a trainer, and a student. She has recently, and in the past attended clinics with such riders as Joe Fargis, George Morris, Louise Serio, and Greg Best. Tulip Pond continues to show at shows such as Swan Lake, Upperville, HITS, and Lexington, VA.and has riders from short stirrup to junior hunters.

She grew up riding and showing in her hometown of Culpeper, VA, where she was able to gain knowledge from both world class riders and local horse professionals. Spending her spare time doing anything horse-related, Shannon was met with many opportunities, learning to saddle break young Arabians, breeze and rehab race horses, fox hunting, competing on a variety of levels, and even running her own boarding operation.

Shannon competed in the IHSA with Mary Washington College’s Varsity Equestrian Team during her time in college, and spent her spare time while in graduate school in Charlottesville, VA teaching, riding, and showing. Since moving to Maryland, Shannon has worked as an instructor at the Potomac Horse Center, and even spent some time in England, studying under grand prix-level trainers in Oxford.

Facilities  ↑

Tulip Pond is made up of forty stunning acres nestled by glorious trees. Our turnout paddocks all have spacious fields of flat grazing terrain with plenty of running space. Many of the fields have huge run-in sheds. All fields have board fencing. We also offer private and semi-private turnout.

Our middle aisle (old barn) is made up of eight stalls with Tulip Pond's wonderful horses that are responsible for teaching lessons and the GWU team. These horses live in 12x12 stalls with mats and are just as spoiled as our boarders. Old barn also includes "lesson tack room", a laundry room, heated rest room, wash stall, sitting room, and a beautiful office with french doors, Oriental carpets, and a beautiful view of our stunning sunsets.

New barn is made up of 16 stalls with mats under hoof, and plenty of ventilation. It was custom made with our special boarders in mind. It includes two separate tack rooms, two wash stalls with hot and cold water, 14 foot aisles, and beautiful open ceilings. Each horse gets a fan in the summer and blankets in the winter.

Our outdoor ring was built 150'x 250' with terrific drainage, and Perma Flex footing was spread evenly throughout.

Our indoor was built 80'x 204' with high ceilings, light panels, a heated viewing room, and also includes Perma flex footing, mixed with stone dust and felt.

You have to see it to believe it! We have built a horse heaven, we guarantee it! Feel free to come by and see what we have opened up to the equestrian community.

"Tulip Pond and owner Daphne Boogaard make boarding my horse a relaxing and enjoyable experience. It’s a beautiful farm in a great location with wonderful barns/stalls, and great help. Daphne has a group of students, young and adult, who show regularly and a barn manager who teaches and shows. A spectacular, huge indoor arena and an equally large and amazing outdoor arena make riding a real pleasure. It’s a hidden gem – come take a look and you’ll see what a wonderful place Tulip Pond Farm is!!"

"I returned to riding in 2003, after a 20+ year break. I was initially drawn to Tulip Pond Farm because it is an amazing facility with a beautiful indoor ring, a huge outdoor both with great footing, an immaculate barn and lush green turnout pastures. Then I met Daphne the owner/trainer. Her enthusiastic approach to learning all aspects of horsemanship is clearly evident; from learning the proper way to groom and tack up a horse to learning how to pilot a jump course safely and still have fun."

"At Tulip Pond Farm you get the whole package, an owner/trainer that does not look at horses as tools but as companions and partners with their rider. This philosophy has allowed me to continue to learn and grow in all areas of horsemanship. I highly recommend Tulip Pond Farm as a place to take lessons and board your horse. It is a place where dreams do come true!"
